Refiners Alert as Hurricane Season Starts Hurricane season began today and runs through November, and while the entire energy sector is on its toes after seeing Hurricane Harvey's huge impact on the industry, refiners are perhaps the most alert. Fitch Ratings, in a pre-season hurricane report, notes Harvey at its peak knocked out 3.6M bpd of refining capacity across Texas and Louisiana -- about one-fifth of the US total -- affecting companies such as Valero, Exxon, Marathon Petroleum, Total, CITGO and Motiva. "While Harvey had a relatively modest effect on U.S. E&Ps, mostly in the form of limited facility shut downs and supply chain disruptions, the category four hurricane had a disproportionately large impact on US refiners."
