Oil Prices Rise Ahead of OPEC Meeting Oil prices started the week higher as traders tempered their expectations for production increases from the global oil cartel. July-dated light, sweet crude oil futures rose 1.2% to $65.85 a barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday, recovering last week's losses. Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose 2.6% to $75.34 a barrel. Traders were looking ahead to a meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies on Friday, at which Saudi Arabia -- the cartel's de facto leader -- and Russia are expected to support easing a price-boosting production cap that has been in place for over a year. OPEC members were said to be discussing a production increase of between 300,000 and 600,000 barrels a day, according to reports from Bloomberg. That would represent a substantial reduction from the market's previous expectations of 500,000 to 1 million barrels a day more from Saudi Arabia alone, and an increase as large as 1.5 million barrels a day from Russia. |
