Oil major BP said Thursday that it has agreed to buy Chargemaster, the UK's largest electric vehicle charging company. However, no price was put on the deal. This is the oil major's fifth foray into the electric vehicle market this year, with BP estimating that there will be 12 million EVs on UK roads by 2040, up from around 135,000 in 2017. Founded in 2008, Chargemaster runs POLAR, the largest public charging network in the UK with 6,500 charge points. The network has over 40,000 customers, some paying a monthly subscription fee, the remainder re-charging on a pay-as-you-go basis. Chargemaster also supplies home charging points across the UK, and is the charging partner for a number of car manufacturers. "Fast and convenient charging is critical to support the successful adoption of electric vehicles," BP Downstream's chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said. Combining Chargemaster's expertise with BP's assets "is an important step towards offering fast, and ultra-fast charging at BP sites across the UK, and to BP becoming the leading provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, on the road or at home," he said. BP has over 1,200 service stations across the UK. Its customers can expect to access BP Chargemaster chargers on forecourts over the next 12 months, it said. These would include 150 kW rapid chargers capable of delivering 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. In January, BP invested $5 million in FreeWire, which manufactures mobile EV rapid charging systems. In February, it announced an electric mobility development project with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. In May, BP announced an agreement with China's NIO Capital to explore joint opportunities in advanced mobility and invested $20 million in StoreDot, an ultra-fast battery company based in Israel.
