S&P Global Platts assessed US spot methanol at 131.75-132.25 cents/gal FOB USG for October and November. That is the firmest price for a front month since September 25, 2014, when it was 132.50 cents/gal FOB USG, according to Platts data. Spot pricing has increased 6.45% week on week and 10.45% since the start of the month, Platts data showed. Global pricing has also increased since the start of the month, with Chinese spot pricing up $12 to $423/mt CFR China Thursday and European spot up Eur26.62/mt to Thursday's assessment at Eur447.91/mt FOB Rotterdam. US market participants could not pinpoint the reason behind the recent run up in prices however sources opined that a unconfirmed recent production outage in Trinidad and Tobago could be exerting the upward pressure.
