Total crude and condensate output rose to 370,500 b/d in 2019-20 from 315,000 b/d a year earlier. This was the highest level for any fiscal year since 415,000 b/d in 2011-12, according to the government's Australian Petroleum Statistics (APS) data. Condensate output was 224,400 b/d in 2019-20, up from the previous record of 202,000 b/d in 2018-19 and 74pc higher than 129,000 b/d in 2011-12. Several LNG projects that also produce condensate have started in the past five years, including the 15.6mn t/yr Gorgon LNG and 8.9mn t/yr Wheatstone LNG ventures operated by Chevron, as well as the 8.9mn t/yr Ichthys LNG and 3.6mn t/yr Prelude floating LNG projects. Australian crude production reached a three-year high of 146,000 b/d in 2019-20, up from 113,000 b/d a year earlier and the highest since 154,500 b/d in 2016-17. Australia's four refineries are using more domestic crude, providing a ready market for the rising production. Domestically produced crude accounted for 26pc of average feedstock use of 457,600 b/d in 2019-20, compared with 19.2pc of 511,000 b/d in 2018-19, the APS data show. But Australia's refined product output fell its lowest level in at least nine years, as jet fuel and gasoline production was hit by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on air and road travel. Refined product output was 446,700 b/d in 2019-20, down from 502,000 b/d in 2018-19 and the lowest since the APS data series started in 2010-11. Output of all key refined products - gasoline, jet fuel and diesel - fell to long-term lows. Australia's domestic oil product sales hit a five-year low of 981,000 b/d in 2019-20, down from 1.05mn b/d in 2018-19 and the lowest since 966,000 b/d in 2014-15. Australia relies on imports to meet domestic consumption. Imports of crude and refined products dropped to an average of 925,000 b/d in 2019-20 from 995,000 b/d in 2018-19. Imports were last lower at 905,000 b/d in 2015-16. The decline was largely the result of weaker crude oil imports, which fell to 304,000 b/d in 2019-20 from 375,000 b/d in 2018-19 to the lowest in more than nine years. By contrast, refined product imports were steady from a year earlier at 621,000 b/d in 2019-20. |
